Names do a lot of work setting the tone and creating cohesion in a game world, and for that reason I find lists of names indispensable, especially for long-term campaigns. Nothing destroys the mood of your carefully-crafted, gritty, dark, pseudo-historical campaign setting faster than a player naming their character Billy Bigballs the Buttlicker or Cheeto Pizza or Saddam Hussein or some other silly thing, and asking them to select from a list of names helps get everyone on the same page regarding the tone of the campaign, which I do believe ultimately leads to greater player satisfaction as the world feels more real and the stakes feel more real and the players' emotional investment is greater.
To that end, the Story Games Names Project by Jason Morningstar is a valuable resource and one I have used often. However, in my campaigns I tend to use the same handful of lists from SGNP over and over again, so I'm always looking for more.
I recently finished reading Otessa Moshfegh's astounding novel Lapvona and as I was reading I compiled a list of the names of people and places in the book, which I think would be perfect for a pseudo-historical fantasy campaign.
